IFNB1 molecular target information overview
Overview of IFNB1 molecular targets
Interferons (IFNs) are a group of signaling proteins synthesized and released by host cells in response to pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, or tumor cells. Under normal circumstances, virus-infected cells release interferons to enable surrounding cells to improve their antiviral defenses. Based on the receptor type, human interferons can be divided into three major types: type I interferons, including IFN-α, IFN-β, IFN-ε, IFN-κ, and IFN-ω, type II interferons (called IFN-γ in humans), and type III interferons. IFN-β upregulates and downregulates multiple genes through the signaling pathways STAT1 and STAT2, most of which are involved in antiviral immune responses. IFN-β plays an important role in inducing a wide range of nonspecific antiviral infections. It also affects cell proliferation and regulates immune responses.

Human IFNB1 target molecular function (prediction)
Enables chloramphenicol O-acetyltransferase activity and cytokine activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to cytokine stimulus; negative regulation of T-helper 2 cell cytokine production; and positive regulation of nitrogen compound metabolic process. Acts upstream of or within response to exogenous dsRNA. Predicted to be located in extracellular region. Predicted to be active in extracellular space. Implicated in COVID-19.

Mouse Ifnb1 target molecular function (prediction)
Enables cytokine activity and type I interferon receptor binding activity. Involved in B cell proliferation; cellular response to virus; and type I interferon signaling pathway. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including cellular response to organic cyclic compound; defense response to other organism; and negative regulation of osteoclast differentiation. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in embryo and liver. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in COVID-19. Orthologous to human IFNB1 (interferon beta 1).
