  • Overview of IL6R molecular targets

Interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) is a member of the interleukin 1 (IL-1) cytokine family. It is secreted by a variety of cells including immune cells, epithelial cells and adipocytes and is a natural inhibitor of the pro-inflammatory effects of IL-1β. IL-ra is a mediator that can bind to the interleukin 1 receptor (IL-1R) on the cell surface inefficiently. IL-1R is also a receptor that binds to IL-1, so IL-1ra can prevent IL-1 from sending signals to cells. This protein inhibits the activity of IL-1α and IL-1β and regulates a variety of IL-1-related immune and inflammatory responses. IL-1RN gene polymorphisms are associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic fractures and gastric cancer. Mutations in this gene will lead to a rare disease, IL-1ra deficiency. Mutations in this gene are also associated with the risk of schizophrenia. It is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Human IL6R target molecular function (prediction)

Contributes to ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor activity; interleukin-6 receptor activity; and interleukin-6 receptor binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cytokine-mediated signaling pathway; positive regulation of cell population proliferation; and positive regulation of macromolecule metabolic process. Located in apical plasma membrane and extracellular space. Part of ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor complex and interleukin-6 receptor complex. Implicated in Alzheimer's disease; Huntington's disease; hyper IgE syndrome; obesity; and stomach cancer. Biomarker of several diseases, including Graves' disease; obesity; proliferative diabetic retinopathy; pulmonary tuberculosis; and sleep apnea.
