  • Overview of CXCL5 molecular targets

CXC motif chemokine 5 (CXCL5), also known as epithelial-derived neutrophil-activating peptide 78 (ENA-78), is a small molecular weight cytokine in the CXC chemokine family. CXCL5 can be produced after cells are stimulated by inflammatory cytokines IL-1 or TNF-α, and eosinophils can also express CXCL5, while type II interferon IFN-γ can inhibit its expression. CXCL5 exerts its effects by interacting with the cell surface chemokine receptor CXCR2, stimulating the chemotaxis of neutrophils with angiogenic properties and participating in connective tissue remodeling. CXCL5 also has the function of regulating neutrophil homeostasis. CXCL5 is highly expressed in atherosclerosis (a chronic inflammatory state), but is not associated with neutrophil infiltration. On the contrary, CXCL5 can directly control the formation of foam cells of macrophages, thereby protecting against atherosclerosis.

Mouse Cxcl5 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable CXCR chemokine receptor binding activity; chemokine activity; and protein binding activity. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including leukocyte homeostasis; regulation of neutrophil mediated killing of gram-negative bacterium; and response to lipopolysaccharide. Predicted to be located in extracellular region. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Orthologous to several human genes including CXCL6 (CXC motif chemokine ligand 6).
