  • CD80 molecular target review

Cluster of differentiation 80 (CD80) is a protein found on dendritic cells, activated B cells, and monocytes that provides an essential co-stimulatory signal for T cell activation and survival. It is also known as B7-1. The cDNA of B7-1 is predicted to be a type I membrane protein, a membrane protein synthesized on a signal peptide that is translocated on the endoplasmic membrane. The protein is predicted to contain two extracellular domains with a structure similar to that of Ig, a hydrophobic transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic domain. The CD80 and CD86 genes encode B7-1 and B7-2, respectively, which are structurally similar members of the immunoglobulin superfamily expressed on various hematopoietic cell types. B7-1 and B7-2 provide co-stimulatory signals to T cells by interacting with CD28 and CTLA4.
