CD4 molecular target information overview

  • Molecular name: CD4, CD4 molecule
  • Gene family: CD molecules; V-set domain containing; C2-set domain containing
  • Alias: CD4 antigen (p55); T-cell surface glycoprotein CD4

  • Overview of CD4 molecular targets

CD4, also known as T4, is a 55 kD single-chain type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed in most thymocytes, T cell subsets, and monocytes/macrophages. As a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, CD4 can recognize antigens bound to MHC class II molecules and participate in cell-cell interactions, thymic differentiation, and signal transduction. CD4 is the main receptor for HIV and can bind to HIV gp120. CD4 also interacts with IL-16.

Human CD4 target molecule function (prediction)

Enables several functions, including interleukin-16 binding activity; interleukin-16 receptor activity; and protein homodimerization activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to stimulus cytokine; leukocyte differentiation; and positive regulation of intracellular signal transduction. Acts upstream of or within maintenance of protein location in cell. Located in external side of plasma membrane and membrane raft. Is integral component of plasma membrane. Implicated in immunodeficiency 79. Biomarker of COVID-19 and severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Mouse Mouse Cd4 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable several functions, including interleukin-16 binding activity; interleukin-16 receptor activity; and protein homodimerization activity. Involved in helper T cell enhancement of adaptive immune response. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including defense response to Gram-negative bacterium; positive regulation of calcium-mediated signaling; and positive regulation of peptidyl-tyrosine phosphorylation. Located in endoplasmic reticulum; external side of plasma membrane; and membrane raft. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; brain; genitourinary system; hemolymphoid system; and liver and biliary system. Used to study type 1 diabetes mellitus. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in immunodeficiency 79. Orthologous to human CD4 (CD4 molecule).
