CD13, also known as amino acid peptide N, is a member of the metalloproteinase integrin type II. CD13 is a receptor for coronaviruses that cause respiratory disease in humans and several animal species. CD13 functions as a zinc-binding metalloproteinase that modifies the N-terminal amino acids of MHC class II-bound peptides in cell surface antigen presentation. CD13 is expressed in granulocytes, monocytes and their precursors, as well as in most acute myeloid leukemias and a small fraction of acute lymphoblastic leukemias. CD13 is expressed in non-hematopoietic cells including epithelial cells, renal proximal tubules, intestinal brush borders, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, brain cells, bone marrow, osteoclasts, and bile duct lining cells.
