  • CHI3L1 molecular target review

Chitinase 3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) is secreted by many cell types, including macrophages, chondrocytes, and certain tumor cells. The exact physiological function of CHI3L1 is unknown, but it is involved in developmental and inflammatory diseases, such as asthma and tumors. CHI3L1 is a Th2-promoting cytokine that is expressed at high levels in the tumor microenvironment and serum of cancer patients. Elevated CHI3L1 expression is strongly correlated with the development stage and outcome of multiple tumor types, suggesting that CHI3L1 can be used as a biomarker for disease severity. Treatment with neutralizing antibodies to CHI3L1 is effective in animal models of glioblastoma multiforme. CHI3L1 can promote angiogenesis through VEGF-dependent and -independent pathways. CHI3L1 can also enhance tumor survival under gamma irradiation.
