KITLG molecular target information overview
Overview of KITLG molecular targets
Stem cell factor (SCF) is a cytokine that binds to the c-Kit receptor and exists as a transmembrane protein and a soluble protein. SCF promotes mast cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and survival, as well as the release of histamine and tryptase, which are involved in allergic responses. SCF acts synergistically with a variety of growth factors such as IL-3, IL-6, IL-11, GM-CSF, G-CSF, and Epo to induce myeloid and erythroid colony formation. This cytokine plays an important role in hematopoiesis (blood cell production), spermatogenesis, and melanogenesis. Myocardial-specific overexpression of transmembrane SCF promotes stem cell migration, cardiac function after myocardial infarction, and animal survival. Mutations in the SCF gene in dogs suggest that this gene is a candidate susceptibility gene for skin cancer.

Human KITLG target molecular function (prediction)
Predicted to enable cytokine activity and stem cell factor receptor binding activity. Involved in embryonic hemopoiesis; male gonad development; and positive regulation of cell population proliferation. Located in several cellular components, including filopodium; lamellipodium; and plasma membrane. Implicated in autosomal dominant nonsyndromic deafness 69 and familial progressive hyperpigmentation with or without hypopigmentation.

Mouse Kitl target molecular function (prediction)
Enables cytokine activity and stem cell factor receptor binding activity. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including positive regulation of cell differentiation; positive regulation of cell population proliferation; and positive regulation of protein phosphorylation. Located in extracellular space and plasma membrane. Is integral component of membrane. Dominant nonsyndromic deafness 69 and familial progressive hyperpigmentation with or without hypopigmentation. Orthologous to human KITLG (KIT ligand).
