BTC molecular target information overview
Overview of BTC molecular targets
Betacellulin, also known as BTC protein, is encoded by the BTC gene in humans on chromosome 4, region 4q13.3. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the EGF family of growth factors. It is primarily synthesized as a transmembrane precursor and processed into mature molecules by proteolysis. The protein is a ligand for the EGF receptor and binds to EGFR, ERBB4, and other members of the EGF receptor family. It is also a potent mitogen for retinal pigment epithelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells. Data suggest that BTC can effectively promote angiogenesis through activation of the EGF receptor, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and phosphatidylinositol 3' kinase/protein kinase in endothelial cells.
