  • Overview of SERPINE1 molecular targets

Serpin E1, also known as plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), is a member of the serine protease inhibitor superfamily and is primarily produced by the endothelium (vascular endothelial lining cells), but is also secreted by other types of tissues such as adipose tissue. Serpin E1 is the main inhibitor of urokinase and tissue-type plasminogen activator (uPA and tPA). The PA-plasmin system is involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes such as fibrinolysis, fibrosis, angiogenesis, wound healing, tumor cell invasion and metastasis. For example, high levels of uPA and Serpin E1 are associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer patients, and studies have confirmed that the clinical value of uPA and Serpin E1 is at the 1 level and is the most reliable biomarker. In addition to breast cancer, Serpin E1 is also involved in many other diseases such as metabolic syndrome, asthma, major depressive disorder (MDD), and aging-related diseases. The absence of Serpin E1 in plasma will lead to abnormal bleeding, and high levels of Serpin E1 are associated with hereditary thrombophilia.
