  • Overview of IL20 molecular targets

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a 15 kDa glycoprotein that is encoded by a single gene located in the q26-28 region of chromosome 4 in humans. It is a signaling molecule in the immune system that regulates the activity of white blood cells (leukocytes, usually lymphocytes) that have immune functions. IL-2 is the body's natural response to microbial infection, distinguishing between foreign and self antigens. IL-2 functions by binding to the IL-2 receptor, which consists of three chains: the alpha chain (CD25), the beta chain (CD122), and the gamma chain (CD132). Monitoring IL-2 levels in serum provides a more detailed view of a variety of pathological conditions, including cancer, infectious diseases, transplant rejection, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and type 1 diabetes.
