TFRC molecular target information overview

  • Molecular name: TFRC, transferrin receptor
  • Gene family: CD molecules; M28 metallopeptidases
  • Alias: CD71; TFR1; p90
  • Alias: transferrin receptor (p90, CD71)

  • Overview of TFRC molecular targets

Transferrin receptor CD71 is a 1180 kDa type II transmembrane protein that exists as a homodimer on the cell surface and is essential for cell growth. CD71 is expressed in immature, proliferating cells and at lower levels in resting, mature lymphocytes. T cells and B cells stimulated by antigens or mitogens can upregulate the expression of CD71.

Human TFRC target molecular function (prediction)

Acts upstream of or within cellular response to xenobiotic stimulus. Located in several cellular components, including basolateral plasma membrane; clathrin-coated pit; and endosome. Is integral component of plasma membrane. Part of HFE-transferrin receptor complex. Implicated in breast carcinoma; immunodeficiency 46; multiple myeloma; and ovarian cancer. Biomarker of breast cancer; carcinoma (multiple); iron deficiency anemia; and prostate cancer.

Mouse Tfrc target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable several functions, including Hsp70 protein binding activity; chaperone binding activity; and protein homodimerization activity. Involved in osteoclast differentiation; positive regulation of bone resorption; and positive of lymphocyte proliferation. Acts upstream of or within cellular iron ion homeostasis regulations and cellular response to leukemia inhibitory factor. Located in several cellular components, including clathrin-coated pit; endosome; and extracellular exosome. Part of HFE-transferrin receptor complex. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; extraembryonic component; liver; lung; and meninges. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in breast carcinoma; immunodeficiency 46; multiple myeloma; and ovarian cancer. Orthologous to human TFRC (transferrin receptor).
