CXCL12 molecular target information overview
CXCL12 molecular target review
Chemokine CXC ligand 12 (CXCL12), also known as stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), is a chemokine protein that activates leukocytes and is usually induced by proinflammatory stimuli such as LPS, TNF, or IL-1. CXCL12 has a strong chemotactic effect on lymphocytes. During embryogenesis, it promotes the migration of hematopoietic cells from the fetal liver to the bone marrow and the formation of large blood vessels. In adults, CXCL12 plays an important role in angiogenesis, recruiting endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in the bone marrow through a CXCR4-dependent mechanism. CXCL12 also plays a role in tumor metastasis, and cancer cells expressing the CXCR4 receptor can be attracted to target tissues. However, in breast cancer, increased CXCL12 expression indicates a reduced risk of distant metastasis.

Human CXCL12 target molecular function (prediction)
Enables CXCR chemokine receptor binding activity; chemokine activity; and integrin binding activity. Involved in several processes, including integrin activation; negative regulation of apoptotic process; and of leukocyte migration. Acts upstream of or within positive regulation of T cell migration and positive regulation regulation of cell adhesion. Located in extracellular exosome. Part of collagen-containing extracellular matrix. Implicated in breast carcinoma; diabetic angiopathy; human immunodeficiency virus infectious disease; and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Biomarker of diabetic retinopathy; insulinoma; periodontitis; and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
