IL2RA molecular target information overview
Overview of IL2RA molecular targets
Interleukin 2 receptor (IL-2R) is a heterotrimeric protein expressed on the surface of certain immune cells such as lymphocytes, which can bind and respond to the cytokine IL-2. IL-2R consists of three chains: an α chain (IL-2Rα/CD25), a β chain (IL-2Rβ/CD122), and a γ chain (IL-2Rγ/CD132). The α chain binds IL-2 with low affinity, while the complex composed of the β and γ chains binds IL-2 with medium affinity. IL-2 and its receptor play an important role in the immune system, tolerance and immunity, mainly by acting directly on T cells. However, the function of soluble IL-2Rα (sIL-2Rα) is unknown because its low affinity inhibits the binding of IL-2. In any case, elevated levels of sIL-2Rα in body fluids are associated with increased activation of T and B cells and activation of the immune system. Monitoring serum sIL-2Rα levels may provide more detailed insights into pathological conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), certain leukemias, and lymphomas.
