Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is the most important plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and liver during embryonic development. Its content in plasma decreases rapidly after birth, but begins to decrease 3 months before birth. It usually reaches normal adult levels after 8-12 months. The AFP content of pregnant women is measured in maternal blood or amniotic fluid to screen for abnormal development. AFP expression is elevated in some diseases, including umbilical hernia, primary hepatocellular carcinoma, neural tube defects, non-seminoma, yolk sac tumor and ataxia telangiectasia.
