  • LCN2 molecular target review

Lipocalin-2, also known as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) or oncogene 24p3, is expressed in neutrophils and at low levels in epithelial cells of the kidney, prostate, respiratory tract, and digestive tract. Lipocalin-2 participates in innate immunity by chelating iron, which in turn limits bacterial growth. Lipocalin-2 is a biomarker for kidney injury and can also be used as an early diagnostic for chronic kidney disease, contrast-induced nephropathy, and kidney transplantation. Within 2 hours of acute kidney injury (AKI), high levels of Lipocalin-2 are secreted into the blood and urine. The body's Lipocalin-2 level is proportional to the severity of AKI.

Mouse Lcn2 target molecular function (prediction)

Enables iron ion binding activity. Involved in innate immune response; positive regulation of cold-induced thermogenesis; and siderophore transport. Acts upstream of or within extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in absence of ligand; response to bacterium; and response to virus. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including genitourinary system; gut; liver; lung; and spleen. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and urinary tract infection. Orthologous to human LCN2 (lipocalin 2).
