  • Overview of BMP7 molecular targets

Bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7) is a member of the TGF-β superfamily and is expressed in the brain, kidney, and bladder. It plays a key role in the transformation of mesenchymal cells into bone and cartilage. BMP-7 induces phosphorylation of SMAD1 and SMAD5, which in turn induces the transcription of osteogenic genes. In many cell types, BMP-7 treatment is sufficient to induce all genetic markers of osteoblast differentiation. BMP-7 has the potential to treat chronic kidney disease. In infertility that is refractory to FSH treatment, BMP-7 injections may be a therapeutic modality. BMP-7 may also be used as a treatment for obesity in humans.

    Human BMP7 Molecular Target Information

Molecular name: BMP7, bone morphogenetic protein 7

    Alias:

    • BMP-7
    • OP-1
    • osteogenic protein 1

    Gene sequence:NCBI_Gene: 655

    Protein sequence: UniProtKB: P18075

Human BMP7 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable BMP receptor binding activity and cytokine activity. Involved in several processes, including regulation of gene expression; regulation of protein phosphorylation; and transmembrane receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling pathway. Acts upstream of or within negative regulation of neuron differentiation and neuron projection morphogenesis. Located in extracellular space. Implicated in prostate cancer. Biomarker of breast cancer; ovarian carcinoma; prostate cancer; and renal cell carcinoma.

Mouse Bmp7 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable BMP receptor binding activity; cytokine activity; and heparin binding activity. Involved in several processes, including allantois development; animal organ development; and chordate embryonic development. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including embryonic morphogenesis; morphogenesis of a branching epithelium; and regulation of morphogenesis of a branching structure. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; embryo ectoderm; embryo mesenchyme; genitourinary system; and sensory organ. Used to study obstructive sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in prostate cancer. Orthologous to human BMP7 (bone morphogenetic protein 7).
