  • Overview of DCN molecular targets

Decorin (decorin) is a secreted proteoglycan of the leucine-rich low molecular weight proteoglycan (SLRP) family. Decorin regulates the biological activity of the extracellular collagen matrix and matrix-associated growth factors FGF, GDF-8/Myostatin, TGF-beta, and WISP-1. It also binds to and activates EGF receptors, ErbB4, and IGF-1 receptors. Decorin promotes myoblast differentiation, supports angiogenesis, and inhibits tumor development. Studies have shown that Decorin may have an inhibitory effect on the contracture of hypertrophic scars, indicating that it has a certain role in preventing hypertrophic scar formation and promoting scar maturation.

Human DCN target molecular function (prediction)

Enables RNA binding activity. Involved in positive regulation of autophagy. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including positive regulation of mitochondrial depolarization; positive regulation of mitochondrial fission; and of signal transduction. Located in extracellular space. Colocalizes with collagen-containing regulation extracellular matrix. Implicated in breast carcinoma; congenital stromal corneal dystrophy; and high grade glioma. Biomarker of gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Mouse Dcn target molecular function (prediction)

Enables extracellular matrix binding activity and glycosaminoglycan binding activity. Acts upstream of or within peptide cross-linking via chondroitin 4-sulfate glycosaminoglycan. Located in collagen-containing extracellular matrix. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; cardiovascular system; central nervous system; genitourinary system; and sensory organ. Used to study Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and congenital stromal corneal dystrophy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in breast carcinoma; congenital stromal corneal dystrophy; and high grade glioma. Orthologous to human DCN (decorin).
