  • Overview of PTX3 molecular targets

Pentraxin3, also known as tumor necrosis factor-induced gene 14 (TSG-14), is a member of the pentraxin superfamily and has a ring-shaped multimeric structure. Various types of cells, especially mononuclear phagocytes, dendritic cells, fibroblasts and endothelial cells, can rapidly produce and release pentraxin3 in response to primary inflammatory signals (such as toll-like receptors, TNF-α, IL-1β). Pentraxin3 is an acute phase response protein. Its content is low under normal conditions (about 25ng/ml in mice and less than 2ng/ml in humans), but it rises sharply (peaking 6-8 hours after induction) in endotoxic shock, sepsis and other inflammatory and infectious conditions, and the content can reach 200-800ng/ml, which is related to the severity of the disease. In these cases, pentraxin3 is a rapid marker for local activation of innate immunity and inflammatory response. Studies have shown that pentraxin3 has a dual role: protecting the body against pathogens and regulating autoimmunity.

Human PTX3 target molecular function (prediction)

Enables complement component C1q complex binding activity; identical protein binding activity; and virion binding activity. Involved in innate immune response; modulation by host of viral process; and negative regulation of viral entry into host cell. Located in extracellular space. Implicated in cystic fibrosis and invasive aspergillosis. Biomarker of hepatitis C; invasive aspergillosis; pelvic inflammatory disease; pulmonary aspergilloma; and toxic shock syndrome.
