  • IGFBP2 molecular targets review

Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) play an integral role in modifying the effects of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) on a variety of cell types. The family has six structurally related members encoded by different genes. IGFBP2 is the second most abundant IGFBP in the circulation and is present in many other biological fluids and tissues of vertebrates. Serum IGFBP2 levels are elevated in conditions of shock, fasting, hypoxia, or after trauma, suggesting a complex regulation of IGFBP2 expression. IGFBP2 is overexpressed in many malignant tumors and correlates with tumor malignancy, suggesting that IGFBP2 may be involved in tumorigenesis. During development, IGFBP-2 is expressed in multiple tissues. Its expression levels are highest in the central nervous system. High levels of expression have also been detected in the adult central nervous system and in many reproductive tissues.

Enables insulin-like growth factor binding activity. Predicted to be involved in positive regulation of activated T cell proliferation and regulation of insulin-like growth factor receptor signaling pathway. Predicted to act upstream of or within regulation of growth. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including brain; early embryo; limb; metanephros; and reproductive system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in obesity. Orthologous to human IGFBP2 (insulin like growth factor binding protein 2).
