  • Overview of MMP7 molecular targets

Matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP-7), also known as stromelysin, is encoded by the MMP7 gene in humans. MMP-7 is normally expressed in epithelial cells, liver, and mammary glands. The expression of MMP-7 is regulated by the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and mediated by transforming growth factor β (TGF-β). The main role of cleaved/activated MMP-7 is to break down the extracellular matrix by degrading macromolecules including casein, gelatin types I, II, IV, and V, fibronectin, and proteoglycans. MMP-7 may be involved in tumor metastasis and inflammatory processes. Upregulated MMP-7 is associated with many malignancies including esophageal, gastric, colon, liver, pancreatic, and renal cell carcinomas. MMP-7 is highly expressed in advanced colorectal adenomatous polyps with severe dysplasia, and it is involved in the transformation of colorectal adenomas to a malignant state and promotes their growth.
