  • LGALS1 molecular target review

Galectins are a family of β-galactoside binding proteins involved in regulating cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Galectin-1 can be either a monomer or a homodimer and is present in a variety of cells and tissues. In humans, galectin-1 is a protein encoded by the LGALS1 gene. Secreted Galectin-1 has immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects, inhibiting acute and chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. Mouse Galectin-1 has an 88% homology to human aa sequences, 96% to rat aa sequences, and 84% to horse, sheep, cattle, and pig aa sequences. Galectin-1 is highly expressed at the maternal-fetal interface, contributing to fetal immune privilege. Its immunosuppressive properties also appear to allow tumor cells to evade immune detection. While regulating cell growth and proliferation and inducing apoptosis of activated T cells, Galectin-1 can also regulate cytokine secretion or inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines.
