L-selectin, also known as CD62L, is a cell surface glycoprotein that is constitutively expressed in various leukocytes. It is a cell adhesion molecule present in lymphocytes and preimplantation embryos and is a member of the selectin family of proteins. Studies have reported that soluble L-selectin (sL-Selectin) exists in two forms. sL-Selectin comes from lymphocytes and has a molecular weight of approximately 62kDa. The molecular weight of sL-Selectin from neutrophils is 75-100kDa. High concentrations of sL-Selectin can prevent lymphocytes from binding to the endothelium, suggesting that sL-Selectin may play a role in regulating lymphocyte-endothelial binding in vivo. Monitoring sL-Selectin levels in serum can provide more detailed insights into some pathological conditions such as sepsis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Human SELL target molecular function (prediction)

Enables calcium ion binding activity; oligosaccharide binding activity; and protease binding activity. Involved in calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion via plasma membrane cell adhesion molecules and leukocyte tethering or rolling. Is integral component of plasma membrane. Implicated in Crohn's disease; IgA glomerulonephritis; and ulcerative colitis. Biomarker of Alzheimer's disease; IgA glomerulonephritis; and systemic lupus erythematosus.
