IL1A molecular target information overview
Overview of IL1A molecular targets
Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is a 17 kDa extracellular polypeptide that is divided into two proteins, IL-1α and IL-1β. IL-1α is a pleiotropic cytokine that is encoded by the IL1A gene in humans. IL-1α is produced primarily by activated macrophages, neutrophils, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. It has metabolic, physiological, and hematopoietic activities and plays a central role in regulating immune responses. IL-1α can interact with HAX1 and NDN, but the synergistic effect with TNF is most clinically relevant. Both IL-1α and TNF are acute phase cytokines that are febrile and inflammatory. IL-1α is currently being evaluated as a potential therapeutic marker for tumors in clinical trials. Blocking IL-1α activity has potential therapeutic effects in skin diseases, such as acne.
