  • Overview of MUC16 molecular targets

Cancer antigen 125 or carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), also known as mucin 16 or MUC16, is a protein that is encoded by the MUC16 gene in humans. MUC16 is a member of the mucin family of glycoproteins. It is a component of the epithelium of the ocular surface, respiratory tract, and female reproductive tract. As MUC16 is heavily glycosylated, it creates a hydrophilic environment at the apical membrane of epithelial cells, acting as a lubricating barrier against foreign particles and infectious agents. In addition, the cytoplasmic end of MUC16 has been shown to interact with the cytoskeleton by binding to members of the ERM protein family. The expression of MUC16 is altered in dry eye, cystic fibrosis, and several cancers.

Human MUC16 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to act upstream of or within negative regulation of epithelial cell proliferation; negative regulation of interleukin-6 production; and negative regulation of wound healing. Is extrinsic component of membrane. Implicated in ovarian cancer. Biomarker of Sjogren's syndrome; cholangiocarcinoma; dry eye syndrome; keratoconjunctivitis; and pancreatic cancer.
