  • Overview of VEGFA molecular targets

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a subfamily of growth factors, specifically, the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family of cystine knot growth factors. They are important signal transduction proteins involved in vasculogenesis (formation of the embryonic circulatory system from scratch) and angiogenesis (growth of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature). VEGF can stimulate both vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. When blood circulation is insufficient, it can participate in restoring the oxygen supply to tissues. The most important role of VEGF is angiogenesis. During embryogenesis, VEGF regulates the proliferation, migration and survival of endothelial cells, thereby regulating the density and size of blood vessels, but it cannot determine the type of blood vessels. VEGF is found in high concentrations in the serum of patients with bronchial asthma and diabetes. When VEGF is overexpressed, it can cause disease. When blood supply is insufficient, the size of solid tumors is limited; tumors that express VEGF continue to grow and metastasize. Overexpression of VEGF can lead to vascular diseases in the retina of the eye and other parts of the body. Bevacizumab and ranibizumab can inhibit VEGF and control or slow the progression of the disease.
