  • CFD Molecular Targets Overview

Complement factor D, or factor D, also known as lipase, is a serine protease that is required for activation of the alternative complement pathway. Factor D is a member of the trypsin family of peptidases and is encoded in humans by the CFD gene. Factor D is expressed in a variety of tissues, including monocytes/macrophages, muscle, sciatic nerve, endometrium, kidney, intestine, and especially at high levels in adipocytes. In patients with renal failure, circulating factor D concentrations are elevated. Similarly, in patients with Fanconi syndrome, the proximal tubules of the kidney are impaired and urinary factor D concentrations are also at high levels.
