GDF2 molecular target information overview
GDF2 molecular targets review
Human bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP-9), also known as growth differentiation factor 2 (GDF-2), is a member of the BMP subgroup of the transforming growth factor β superfamily protein. It transmits signals through a heterodimeric complex composed of type I and type II BMP receptors. BMP-9 regulates the development and function of a variety of embryonic and adult tissues. BMP-9 is synthesized and secreted by non-parenchymal cells in the liver. It can promote lipid metabolism and inhibit glucose production. In the embryonic central nervous system, BMP-9 plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the cholinergic neuron phenotype. BMP-9 also induces mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into the chondrocyte lineage. At low concentrations, BMP-9 is a proliferation factor for hematopoietic progenitor cells; however, at high concentrations, it promotes the production of TGF-β1 and inhibits the formation of hematopoietic progenitor cell colonies.

Mouse Gdf2 target molecular function (prediction)
Predicted to enable cytokine activity. Involved in several processes, including blood vessel morphogenesis; positive regulation of BMP signaling pathway; and positive regulation of endothelial cell differentiation. Acts upstream of or within osteoblast differentiation; positive regulation of gene expression; and positive regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Predicted to be located in extracellular region. Predicted to be active in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; ileum; interphalangeal joint; liver; and male reproductive gland or organ. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Orthologous to human GDF2 (growth differentiation factor 2).
