  • Overview of BMP6 molecular targets

Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP-6), encoded by the BMP6 gene, is a member of the TGF-β superfamily. BMPs can induce the growth of bone and cartilage. BMP-6 can induce all osteoblast markers in mesenchymal stem cells. Another function of BMP-6 was described in the journal Nature Genetics in 2009. It is a key regulator of hepcidin, a small peptide secreted by the liver, the main regulator of mammalian iron metabolism.

Human BMP6 target molecular function (prediction)

Enables BMP receptor binding activity and protein heterodimerization activity. Involved in several processes, including negative regulation of adherens junction organization; positive regulation of macromolecule metabolic process; and transmembrane receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling pathway. Predicted to be located in cytoplasm and vesicle. Predicted to be active in extracellular space. Biomarker of breast cancer; esophagus squamous cell carcinoma; prostate cancer; and renal cell carcinoma.

Mouse Mouse Bmp6 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable BMP receptor binding activity; protein heterodimerization activity; and receptor ligand activity. Involved in several processes, including iron ion homeostasis; positive regulation of signal transduction; and of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including regulation endochondral ossification; male genitalia development; and osteoblast differentiation. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; female reproductive system; sensory sensory organ; and skeleton. Orthologous to human BMP6 (bone morphogenetic protein 6).
