  • Former name: STMY2
  • Alias: matrix metalloproteinase 10 (stromelysin 2); stromelysin 2

  • Overview of MMP10 molecular targets

Matrix metalloproteinase 10 (MMP-10), also known as stromelysin-2, is encoded by the MMP10 gene in humans. This gene is part of the MMP gene cluster located on chromosome 11q 22.3. MMP-10 degrades proteoglycans and fibronectin and plays an important role in the degradation of the extracellular matrix under various pathological conditions. MMP-10 is strongly expressed in osteoclasts and most mononuclear cells in the bone marrow, is induced by cytokines in human keratinocytes, and is also expressed in human head and neck cancer and lung cancer cells. Overexpression of MMP-10 in the corneal epithelium of diabetic patients may be a major factor in diabetic retinopathy. MMP-10 is associated with the viability and metastasis of tumor stem cells.
