RBP4 molecular target information overview

  • Molecular name: RBP4, retinol binding protein 4
  • Gene family: Lipocalins
  • Alias: retinol-binding protein 4, plasma

  • Overview of RBP4 molecular targets

Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) belongs to the apolipoprotein family and is a specific carrier of retinol (vitamin A alcohol) in the blood. It transports retinol from the liver to peripheral tissues. Recently, RBP4 has been implicated as an adipokine that contributes to insulin resistance in AG4KO mice. It is secreted by adipocytes and can signal other cells when blood glucose concentrations decrease. Mutations in the RBP4 gene are associated with autosomal dominant microphthalmia, anophthalmia, and ocular histology.
