MPO molecular target information overview

  • Molecular name: MPO, myeloperoxidase

  • Overview of MPO molecular targets

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a peroxidase that is encoded in humans by the MPO gene located on chromosome 17. It is a lysosomal protein present in the azurophilic granules of neutrophils and is released into the extracellular space during degranulation. MPO is most abundantly expressed in neutrophils and produces hypohalous acids with antimicrobial activity. MPO has a heme pigment that causes secretions from neutrophils to appear green, like pus. In addition, MPO mediates protein nitrosylation, 3-chlorotyrosine formation, and dityrosine cross-linking. MPO deficiency is a genetic disease that causes immune deficiency. Elevated MPO levels greatly increase the risk of cardiovascular death. It is also believed that MPO plays an important role in the development of atherosclerotic lesions and in causing plaque instability.
