  • Overview of IL3 molecular targets

Interleukin 3 (IL-3) is encoded by the IL3 gene in humans. It is a biological signal (cytokine) that can be used as part of the immune system to enhance the body's innate immune response to disease. It is secreted by basophils and activated T cells and can assist the growth and differentiation of bone marrow-derived T cells in immune responses. IL-3 works by binding to the IL-3 receptor, stimulating the differentiation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells into myeloid progenitor cells, or together with IL-7, stimulating the differentiation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells into lymphoid progenitor cells. In addition, IL-3, together with other cytokines such as erythropoietin (EPO), granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and IL-6, stimulates the proliferation of all cells of the myeloid lineage (granulocytes, monocytes and dendritic cells).

Human IL3 target molecular function (prediction)

Predicted to enable interleukin-3 receptor binding activity. Involved in embryonic hemopoiesis; positive regulation of cell population proliferation; and positive regulation of tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT protein. Predicted to be located in extracellular space. Implicated in Graves' disease; asthma; and rheumatoid arthritis. Biomarker of several diseases, including Ebola hemorrhagic fever; genital herpes; major depressive disorder; obesity; and psoriasis.

Mouse Il3 target molecular function (prediction)

Enables cytokine activity; growth factor activity; and interleukin-3 receptor binding activity. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including cell surface receptor signaling pathway; monocyte differentiation; and regulation of phosphate metabolic process. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in skin; stomach; thymus; and vascular system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Graves' disease; asthma; and rheumatoid arthritis. Orthologous to human IL3 (interleukin 3).
