Crystal violet (also known as methyl violet) has the molecular formula C25H30N3Cl·9H2O, a molecular weight of 407.98, and CAS number 548-62-9. It is a basic dye, soluble in water and ethanol, and stains tissues and nuclei purple. Crystal violet is widely used in cytology, histology, bacteriology and other fields, and is an excellent staining agent.
