Function
Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 24 (CCL24), also known as eotaxin-2 and myeloid progenitor inhibitory factor 2 (MPIF-2), encoded by the CCL24 gene on chromosome 7 in humans, is a CC-chemokine of the eotaxin subfamily. It is produced by activated monocytes, T lymphocytes, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells at sites of type 2 inflammation. CCL24 signals through the G-protein-coupled receptor CCR3, which is highly expressed on eosinophils and also on basophils and Th2 cells; receptor activation drives eosinophil and basophil chemotaxis, degranulation, and release of histamine and leukotriene C4. Although CCL24 shares limited sequence identity with CCL11/eotaxin-1, it is functionally redundant as an eosinophil chemoattractant and contributes to sustained eosinophil recruitment in asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic inflammation, acting alongside IL-5. CCL24 also suppresses colony formation by high-proliferative-potential myeloid progenitor cells and displays direct antimicrobial activity. CCL24 is a secreted chemokine that guides eosinophil and basophil trafficking to allergic tissues.
