Function
Fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2), also known as intestinal FABP (I-FABP), is encoded by the human FABP2 gene on chromosome 4q28.1. It is a small ~15 kDa cytosolic lipid chaperone expressed specifically in the enterocytes of the small intestine, with highest concentration in the jejunum. FABP2 binds long-chain fatty acids absorbed at the apical brush-border membrane and, via a collisional transfer mechanism, delivers them vectorially through the cytoplasm to the endoplasmic reticulum, where they are re-esterified into triglycerides and assembled into chylomicrons for export into lymph. It thus plays a key role in dietary lipid absorption and trafficking. Because it is confined to differentiated enterocytes, circulating FABP2 is a sensitive marker of intestinal mucosal injury and enterocyte damage. It localizes to the cytoplasm of enterocytes.
